Criminalization of Gifted Black Girls in the Education System
Researcher- TAMU RISE (unpublished) 2018 - Texas A&M University
In 2018, I worked with TAMU RISE at Texas A&M as part of an inaugural cohort focused on researching racial injustice and social equity issues in American society. My research centered around the "School to Prison Pipeline" and its impact on gifted and talented black girls. Through my work, I explored the importance of differentiated learning for gifted students, as it can help mitigate behavior issues stemming from unchallenging curriculum. Furthermore, my research highlighted the detrimental effects of deficit thinking and implicit bias amongst teachers and the education system, which often results in black girls being disproportionately disciplined and ultimately pushed out of classes.
